Can you tell I’ve hit upon a bunch of were-creature books lately? Well, here is another one by another author.
This book (part of a larger series, called the Dark-Hunter series) tries to put a little, though not too much, more pomp and such into the story. It gives a grand history about how were-creatures came into being with a curse from a god then some magic by a loving father who couldn’t bear the curse on his children. All very dramatic.
Then it jumps forward to modern day where we meet Maggie and Wren and dive deep into both of their lives pretty quickly.
Maggie’s life isn’t much of a mystery. She’s human and the daughter of a Senator but who’s mother committed suicide to get away from the political life. The father is much too domineering. It’s a bit cliched and I can tell you if I had daughters I’m not sure I’d be thrilled about these kind of stories out there because it’s about completion with a man.
Wren stays quite the mystery other than we know he’s a were-animal staying at a place of sanctuary. We get bits and pieces throughout the story but it’s not till the dramatic finish that we learn the truth about how his parents die (or ?).
From some of the books I’ve read recently, this had a few more twists and turns so that was good. The humor was not really present though the book wasn’t all that serious (there is an old leader, Savitar who definitely doesn’t take anything too seriously!). It was fun to read and as an escapist piece of literature it had a great ending. I’ll probably try another of her books.
