Xander’s in a club at his school called the Running Club (it’s formal name is something longer that I don’t remember off hand).
The objective is for students to run or walk (or skip or jog or hop or …) around the school. Each lap around the school happens to be 1/4 of a mile. They can mark off miles in 1/2 mile increments. Most students get 1-2 miles during their time there (about 45 minutes). The runners are grades K-6.
Another bit about the running club is that the Coach is adding the miles of all the students together and all the parents and teachers together and seeing if the whole school through this program can go around the world. According to the last status report, it looks like they will just make it.
Xander is in front of everyone in this club. He currently has 250 miles (he got a certificate on Monday) and is well on his way to 300 miles. We’ve been told that the past record for a year is 280 so he’s going to break that if that is true. His secret is that we walk to and from school nearly every day. It happens to be exactly 1 mile to school from our house so that means he does 2 miles each day and 10 miles each week.
During the actual running club, he’s not one of the top runners but that is ok. He’s still there and participates and doesn’t complain. He usually does his mile with a friend (Reid, Cameron, Casey, Taylor, and even occasionally a girl!). I think he has fun.
I’ll make another post when the running club wraps up towards the end of May with the results but I’d guess that he’ll do somewhere around 350 miles. Keep it up Xander!
