Book Review: Red Shadows by Mitchel Scanlon

This is part of a series called Anderson PSI Division. It is based on a somewhat if not identical future that the Judge Dredd stories are based on.

Basically in the future, the world has had some form of holocaust which has caused the population to gather into “mega” cities. In these mega-cities, they have created a new form of justice where the police and judicial system are combined into one. There are many kinds of judges that go around being police, judge, juror, and sometimes, executioner.

The twist of the Judge Dredd stories is that that has been some sort of nuclear bit which has changed some peoples DNA causing people to develop PSI (psychic) abilities. Some of them are put into service by the government and some of them go rouge and criminal. This is the story about one PSI Judge named Cassandra Anderson who assists other judges when needed.

This specific story centers around a serial killer who kills because they see a “red” aura. Anderson is on the case but is paired up with a judge who doesn’t trust her and her fame.

It’s a pretty entertaining story. I’ve never read a Judge Dredd book though I have read comics about Dredd and seen the Stalone movie. He was always portrayed as a rough and barely compassionate person. Anderson on the other hand is full of compassion yet can make hard choices when needed though it gets her into problems too.
