Ok, I’m a little late in doing this review.
I’m not quite understanding what Hollywood is trying to do with the movies they are putting out lately. I mean that I understand they are trying to do different things so they can get more people to the theaters but…these inordinately long films are not the answer.
I’m not against long films. There are appropriate films that have a truly epic nature to them and deserve a certain and substantial length to them (The Lord of the Ring’s – each of the trilogy films belong in that category). But the 2 movies I have seen most recently, Superman and Pirates, do not belong in that category. These should be quick action movies that may have some hidden gems of story or acting but they are summer blockbusters that are supposed to be closer to 90 minutes rather than 180 minutes.
Obviously, I feel that Pirates was just too long. It had some entertaining moments and I thought that some of the characterizations had improved (in a moment) but did they really have to insert every bit player from the first movie into this movie and give them significant lines?
The movie was much darker than the first. Davy Jones was just bizarre and I thought the crew was just odd where as I expect they were going for fascinating (I don’t mean odd in an entertaining way either). All scenes with Davy and crew were gray and dreary where as the scenes with the first movie had scenes on the Pearl being fascinating, macabre, scary, dark. It was just missing.
Elizabeth, the character, had some added spice and I like the extra edge they gave her character. The Commodore was interesting too but seemed to be way out of character.
Again, it had entertaining moments but it was just too darn long and parts just didn’t seem to fit with the style established in the first movie.
