Summertime

Summertime is a special time. It is especially so when your life involves kids.

I remember my summertime’s as a kid. We would be with our friends and have free reign of our neighborhood. Sometimes, we would do nothing more than hang out and talk and have lunch over someone’s house and other times we would have games all over the neighborhood where the game was mostly about arguing about the rules. It was truly an amazing time.

Now for our kids generation (remember, Mitchell is 5 and Xander is 7) we have gotten more protective and won’t give our kids free reign over the whole neighborhood. We our fortunate though in that we have very small culdesac with just a few homes that are all inhabited by families with boys with the same age. It is a close approximation.

One thing I have noticed though that is not reflected in my own memories is that if some of the kids are together in the morning and hang out all day, by the middle of the afternoon they are driving each other crazy and arguing over everything even the littlest of things. If they haven’t seen each other all day, then they are just fine. Too much time together is not good.

I wonder if it’s that this generation has just too much stimulation with video games, TV, and such where as my generation allowed quite a bit of “down” time during the summer. It’s just a thought!
