My 2 boys will be going to public school. Their school doesn’t require uniforms but I wonder if somewhere along their grade’s, maybe it should.
I just finished listening to a show on NPR (our local) which was mostly discussing dress codes and how the school and kids interacted. During the show, I was impressed by the Principal they had on the show. His focus was on the goal of education and in general if something wasn’t illegal, dangerous, or (to him it was almost the most important the way it was discussed) distracting to the educational process then it was ok. Also towards the end of the show, they briefly discussed uniforms.
I spent my first 3 grades in Catholic school where we had uniforms. I found that having no need to figure out what to where and how to keep up with the Jones’ (though I’m sure I didn’t think of it in those terms) was liberating. I heard several callers on the show that said the same thing. I certainly wouldn’t require coats and ties or skirts and such but uniforms where everyone was wearing the same thing would change the dynamics and return a focus to learning.
Any other thoughts.
