The SciFi Network original TV series Dresden Files about an actual wizard named Harry Dresden is based on a series of books (I’ve reviewed them here in my blog so look in the archives).
I’ve been somewhat disappointed in the series to date. It’s been pretty flat. In general, I’m ok with adaptations being different than the original source materials. I understand the creative need to modify to fit different media and such. A book can cover a huge timeline while an hour long TV show is only covering a few days so that is just an example of a big difference. Another is a book doesn’t care about special effects budget where as a small network show absolutely does. They have made some good changes such as the wizard staff being a hockey stick and his blast rod being a drum stick. Those are actually kind of brilliant.
Tonight’s show though finally had a nice “bite” to it. It made some of the characters fit closer to what the book puts them as in tone and such. The pace of the story was quicker. It was also nice that Murphy was “in” on the magic stuff though still skeptical. I hope future shows stick to this feel cause to me, this was a good winner.
I guess we’ll see with the next show.
