Sharpening

I’m sharpening again…

This time I’m sharpening blades for my hand planes. I’ve finished my block planes including lapping the soles and sharpening the blades. These are in good shape.

I’m now turning my attention to my bench planes. These are bigger blades. The first one is a very thick blade and is taking quite a bit to get the right initial angle on it. I’m almost there and then I can get it polished and go for the micro bevel. Then on to the next one. I have about 6 more after that.

I also think I may need to get one or two more planes but will wait till the need arises. Specifically, I’m thinking I need a rabbit plane (not sure whether I will get a smaller block or a larger bench version) and maybe a scrub plane though I still use my planer so maybe not. Also a hand router would be fun and a shoulder plane seems useful. Again, these are things that could wait till the need (though the rabbit plane is something that could happen sooner than later).

I have noticed that now that I’ve got a lot of sharpening with the chisels under my belt that going forward with the plane blades is much less frustrating. I know what to expect and how much effort each blade is likely to take. It’s a good feeling to seemingly know what you are doing.
