Finally, I’ve sharpened all my hand planes and chisels.
I have learned a lot about sharpening and what it takes to do it right and what they don’t tell you about it various guides. Most of what they leave out is that the initial (first time you do it) sharpening can take quite a while. I mean quite a while. Like 30 minutes or more. You are trying to get scratch patterns replaced across the whole of the edge and that can take a while depending on the hardness of the blade and the thickness of the blade and the angle and probably a bunch of other factors. Of course, sometimes, you can sharpen a new blade in less than 5 if it is the right blade too so it can all depend.
I’ve also learned a lot about what makes up a hand plane. I’ve got 2 manufacturers planes that I like. I’ve got a few Lie Nielsen hand planes. They are outstanding quality. These planes follow the standard and traditional design with very little to no modification to the original design they are following. I’ve also got a few Veritas Tool hand planes. They are also outstanding quality. These planes have made some modification to the standard or traditional design and try to improve on it for the user of the plane. I really appreciate the thought that has gone into the Veritas designs. I think if I were to by any additional planes, I would lean towards Veritas at this point.
I really am looking forward to using these planes in my work going forward. My next project though is to do some too thinning and maybe a garage sale.
