There are a lot of software companies out there and there are a lot of people who develop software out there. Many of these people get it.
The basic principle is don’t make it hard for your customers. You do your best to make the UI simple. You always make sure that file conversion is simple – especially from your own products.
Intuit doesn’t get this last point especially. Whether you talk Quicken or QuickBooks, conversion between older version of their own software is a pain and migrating from some other manufacturer (like MS Money) is nearly impossible.
They have steps on their web site like it might work but the minute you go to their forums it becomes evident that this is far from the truth.
Make it hard and you lose a customer. They certainly lost me as one. I bought a product and will be returning it shortly.
