I talk about my immediate family all the time on my site here. I post pictures. I tell about my trials, my triumphs, and all the stuff that happens in between – of course that’s most of it.
I don’t talk much about my extended family. I have a few friends that talk about cousin’s and aunt’s and uncle’s but when they actually talk about these people you find out that they are just family friends – close family friends but not relatives. I’ve always been a bit amused by this behavior.
I got a call yesterday from one of my cousin’s. He’s my real cousin – he’s the son of my Dad’s youngest brother. We had a nice conversation. Troy (that’s his name) sounds like he’s doing well for himself. He’s in the tech industry and was just seeing if I had any knowledge about something he found out about at a conference. I’m afraid I wasn’t very useful to him but it was nice to chat with him none the less. He’s got a couple of rugrats younger than mine and seems happy about life.
Anyway, back to relatives, I have a lot of them as both my parents are from very large families. My Dad is from a smallish family with only eight kids (he was the oldest). My Mom was from a family the size of a small country with sixteen kids (she was the youngest). Even though my Mom and Dad only had 3 kids (me, my sister, and my brother), I think we grew up with lots of the traits of a big family like our dinner table manners (which always shocked Kathy – especially when we first started dating!). Growing up, we always had family coming to visit and I though that was just great. We only had two of my Mom’s sisters living nearby as we had moved west while the rest of the family stayed in the place we all were born in (the south).
Troy mentioned that he read my blog which is cool. I know that some of my Mom’s family has read my blog too. The interweb is a fun way to stay in touch with family.
