Movie Review: Iron Man

Yesterday, Kathy and I saw Iron Man. We both came away thinking that it was a good movie.

The first 30 minutes or there about is really about his back story and his motivation for becoming Iron Man. This is a slow section of the movie. It’s got a few interesting bits and is definitely showing that even though he’s a self indulgent alcoholic that he has a soft side (interesting for a guy who becomes Iron Man?).

Unfortunately, the movie is trying to make us believe that a certain middle east bad guy is the “big bad” for the movie. It doesn’t do this very well and in fact the “big bad” is pretty obvious through out the movie even though it’s not till the last 30-40 minutes that he shows his true colors.

During the time Tony Stark is creating or recreating his suite is really fun with lots of cool technology fantasies and humor. There is some relationship building with his assistant/confidant and his military friend that set up a second movie pretty well.

The ending didn’t really appeal to my comic book reader side. For most of Iron Man’s existence Tony Stark never did what he did at the end. I believe it hasn’t been till recently that he did something like this due to some big story line over at Marvel (the owners of Iron Man).

Anyway, the slowish first part and the ending that I did not really like were not enough to curb my enthusiasm for the film. It had the right mixture of excitement, geeky fun fantasies, and humor through out the great majority of the movie for me to really like it.
