I’m down in Portland, OR for a week. I’m attending 2 woodworking classes (see my woodwoorking blog, This Week in Wood for more details).

Before I left, Kathy and I had a tentative plan that the family would come down for the weekend. We’ve never really come to Portland before and we figured it was a good opportunity to explore and play. Unfortunately, the weather decided to not cooperate. When talking about the Pacific Northwest, when some says the weather isn’t cooperating, you would usually think about a big rain. That’s not the case in this instance. The weather has decided to go to 100+ degrees for the past 4 days and will likely be in the high 90′s on Saturday (when the family would come).

Now, even the boys aren’t excited about coming to visit with the weather being what it is. I suspect that they won’t as one of the key things Kathy thought would be fun was an outdoor activity (not so fun in high 90′s).

It’s a good thing I have movies and a few things I can do on Saturday since it’s a gap day between my 2 woodworking classes.

But as someone who grew up in Southern California, my experience with temperature is much different. I really enjoy 80′s and even the occasional 90 degree day. I’m sure I’d even complain if we had weeks of 90′s because I’ve just gotten to acclimated but I still enjoy the warm weather and just soak it in.

I got the little wading pool out and the slip and slide out for the boys so there was some good spring time water play. Fun was had by all.

Saturday was opening day.

When you picture opening day for a baseball season, you picture a bright sunny day with people coming to cheer their teams on. For Little League, you picture the same thing but instead of just a team to cheer on, they come to cheer on the children. America has much of it’s recent history and mythos built around baseball so it goes to many of our spiritual core.

We signed Xander and Mitchell up for Little League this year and are looking forward to the whole experience. The practices have been fun. The boys have been enjoying it and getting better at the game. Sometimes, they do the kid thing and get all upset about it because it interrupts something they were doing or they are a little lazy but as I said, they are enjoying it.

Saturday was the big day. Both Xander and Mitchell’s first games of the season – Opening Day. Xander was going to miss his game though because of some school testing (another post maybe later!).

But we got the email. The basic measurement for canceling games is that if you can fish in the field then you cancel the game. Well, given the pictures they sent, you could not only fish, you could probably go scuba diving in the infield. It had been raining for better than 24 hours and quite heavy. The games would not have been fun.

Sad to have opening day cancelled but good that Xander didn’t have to miss the first game of the season!

After some calls and a bit of research, I found that I need to find out from the gas company how much extra capacity on my gas meeter I have so that we can determine the possible size of generator we can have.

Unfortunately, the power folks have been slow to get their call centers back up after the wind storm so I haven’t been able to get that information.? I hope to get it next week and then we can make some decisions.

We woke up this morning to a very cold house.? When we were finally able to check the temperature we found it was 42 degrees F.? Wow, that is cold for the inside of a house!

That was enough for Kathy so she decided that we were moving operations over to her folks house till power came on at our house.? It took about an hour to pack up and get the house closed up.? We also left our number with a couple of neighbors so they could call us when the power came back on.? We got to Kathy’s folks house and unloaded the car and I unpacked my computer and was pirating an internet signal when we got the call…

…power was back on!? Isn’t that how it always goes?!?!

Well, I got back to the house and turned it back on (we turned the master off so that any power surges wouldn’t blow anything when the power came back on).? I made sure the furnace came back on and that the other stuff worked (phone, internet, lights, alarm,…) then went back to get the family.

Now we are back and the house is almost back to warm normal.? Kathy is taking a shower and I get to go next.? The boys are watching some TV and everything is good!

I’m going to have to get a better fireplace insert and maybe a generator so we can do better for the next time anything like this happens but that will have to wait till Monday.
